Hollywood mag praises Iran film ‘Asphyxia’

Leading US film magazine Hollywood Reporter has given Iran film ‘Asphyxia’ a rave review owing to international debut at Tallinn Black Nights Filmfest, Estonia.

In a recent website article on the Hollywood Reporter, the Iranian film ‘Asphyxia’ was compared to a Hitchcockian thriller with “all the suspense and slow-burn” of a classic film.

“Winter is coming in Iranian writer-director Fereydoun Jeyrani’s icy monochrome murder-mystery,” it wrote, adding the film pits Sahra’s (played by Elnaz Shakerdoust) lowly situation against an apartment block’s imminent demolition, which will ultimately leave her homeless.

‘Asphyxia’ has come off its international premiere at Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn, Estonia, last week.

Hollywood reporter goes on to praise Jeyrani’s direction on the film, calling it a “chilly mood piece” that has all the stylistic signifiers of an art house niche item.

Iranian actors Elnaz Shakerdoust and Navid Mohammadzadeh star in the flick.

Mahya Petrosian and Poulad Kimiaee are some of the other key cast in Jeyrani’s film rated as an adult-only film.
